Topic Three: Rhinoceros Questions
Rhinoceros Article Questions
Question 4
I prefer the woodcut by Hans Burgkmair than by Albrecht Durer. I suppose
that I prefer the wider range of shades that Burgkmair captures with
his technique in crosshatching and marksmanship. The bolder lines just
seems to have more of a presence, and I feel that I can read more color
from this woodcut than from the one by Durer.
Question 7
I find Giovanni Penni's depiction of the rhinoceros to be most amusing
for a variety of reasons. It is, first off, the outlier amongst all the
other depictions of the rhinoceros. It definitely does not share the
amount of detail that all the other depictions have, and it has no
variation in line weight. I think the main reason it amuses me is
because of the assumptions I had before I saw the depiction. When I read
the article about Penni's depiction, and how he was well informed on
how the rhinoceros looked, I instantly assumed that Penni had drawn a
hyper realistic rhinoceros with immense amounts of details. Then when I
saw the depiction, I thought to myself "wait what?" I was expecting
something that wasn't even really hinted at in the article, and it
caught me off guard
